It’s not the turkey that makes you sleep on Thankgiving

horse_head-429x499How many times have you heard people blaming the turkey for making them sleepy after a hardy Thanksgiving meal? If your like me, then it is quite a bit. Well it not their fault, turkey does contain tryptophan. Tryptophan has been used for years to calm horses, which started the myth. You see horses are often jumpy around strangers such as a horseshoer or veterinarian. So they would be given tryptophan to calm them down (the horses I mean). But it only works on horses who are deficient in tryptophan from being grain fed rather than pasture fed.

Humans you ask?

Tryptophan generally does not effect humans because the consume plenty of tryptophan in their daily diet.  Egg whites have nearly twice the tryptophan as turkey.  In fact pork chops, sunflowers seeds, cheddar and Parmesan cheese,  and cod all have higher levels of tryptophan than turkey.

So why do get sleepy?

Solaine and atropine in potatoes.  Solaine is a neurotoxin that is found in small amounts in nightshade plants such as potatoes.  The neurotoxin in solaine effects the neurotransmitters in the brain, it preventing connections from being made between neurons.  This leads to decreased mental function, which makes you think you are tired and in a need of a nap or gives you a nasty migraine by the next day.  Atropine depresses the parasympathetic nervous system, which causes you to be sleepy.  The amount of each are quite small so the effects are limited and only led to a nice nap.

The second factor is that if you are like me on Thanksgiving–you ate too much. That draws lots of blood from the body to digestive system, adding to the willingness to take a nap.

Now, this all seems quite harmless, and a good nap during the football isn’t such a bad thing.  However, in my book Nightshade Free, Pain Free! I detail the long-term effects of the neurotoxins in nightshades plants and how the destroy your health over time.  While the nap is harmless, solaine has 100% bonding with brain tissue, in time this will led to problems in your thinking.

Now you can tell your friends:  The Potato did it.

sweet_potatoHere’s the good news:  Sweet potatoes and yams are the best food you can eat and they do not make you sleepy–so you can watch the game.

Happy Thanksgiving!
